Ah, I believe your logic is not watertight. Yes, Paul Wofwitz is a person, as is Francis Fukuyama, as is Leo Strauss, and on and on. Hitler is a person, so is Stalin. I am not referring to their persons as such, but their ideas, or rather ideologies that have had disastrous consequences. On this count, the University of Chicago is unsurpassed in its share of dimwitted ideologies that have accounted for the national disasters of the past 20 years.

Dear god your one of thooose people. First of all, Paul Wolfwitz is a person, not an idea. In fact, you only listed three "ideas", that are essentially the same thing. Sure, some economists and political thinkers associated with the university may have promoted neoconservatism but you'll be sure to find neocon economists AT NEARLY EVERY LARGE RESEARCH UNIVERSITY . If you're going to get all pseudopolititcal, at least make sure your argument doesn't have logical flaws an otter could point out.

Leo Strauss, Paul Wolfwitz, Milton Friedman, Neoconservatism, Monetarism, Iraq War, Deregulation of financial markets... come on, if you didn't know these famously bad and debunked ideas were shamelessly peddled by the University of Chicago, then why the fuck did you ask me what I was talking about?
By: 18count. on 01 Mar 10, 06:59:02
What the fuck are you talking about?

University of Chicago, the best university? It's certainly the best when it comes to ruining America. Its neo-conservatism brought up two endless wars, and its neo-liberal economics gave us the financial collapse. Thanks!

oh yeah i agree with you and this video. my comment was in response to hwwolverine saying that cambridge and oxford are by far the best universities in the world
By: AlvinHDavernport. on 25 Jan 10, 00:02:10
@hwwolverine That is not necessarily true. I don't know what makes you think that US schools require "just" a specialization.. Take UChicago or Columbia, for example, whose core curricula have achieved global recognition.

@AlvinHDavernport that they are evaluating a school as a whole, and not just the undergraduate program. This video, I believe, concerns the undergraduate program of Chicago, which is considered by many the most rigorous and academically intense in the nation. That doesn't mean UChicago IS the best school on the planet, it just means that its College has a truly outstanding reputation.

Rankings people: no ranking method is perfect, and they should by no means be interpreted as listing universities from best to worst. The ARWU list places a heavy emphasis on scientific output. Therefore big, research-oriented universities will rank higher than liberal arts colleges, which may offer a more thorough and enriching academic experience. The THES-QS ranking is, in my opinion, too biased for British schools. The USNWR rankings are a little more fair, I would say, but bear in mind...

how does that make a degree more valuable? it's just a different approach. there are several schools that have rigorous core curriculums that require you to take many classes outside of your major, like u of c and columbia. harvard simply takes a different, more specialized approach and i don't think youre the one to judge which approach is more valuable. if a general education was absolutely more valuable, im sure harvard would implement that sort of system.

you could argue that the united kingdom 'made' america too. much of american culture was highly influenced by british culture. is it better? not necessarily. just because it's the first doesnt mean it's the best...

plus, cambridge and oxford essentially made harvard. they're both a lot older and more rooted in a stronger curriculum than is harvard
By: hwwolverine. on 18 Jan 10, 06:34:13
I have and that was what the ranking said. plus, a degree from oxford/cambridge is worth more than a degree from harvard because the british system requires more knowledge in all areas relating to your major, not just a specialization.

As for the social life, I don't care much about it either, and I shouldn't have made any generalizations since I based my comments on the impressions I had when I visited the school. There were a lot of factors that influenced my impressions. I'll tell you a little secret, though--I'm kind of regretting not having opted to go to UChicago. There's something about that school that I just love.
