The Experience of Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is one of a number of techniques available to people seeking to remove their unwanted hair. The word 'laser' is a little intimidating: it sounds like something out of a science fiction novel. This article will look at what the experience of laser hair removal is actually like.

Laser hair removal has a number of advantages over other hair removal techniques such as waxing, shaving and plucking. The most prominent of these is the medium to long term effects of the hair removal: after a schedule of treatment sessions, it is possible to see a permanent cessation of most hair growth in the treated area. This compares very favourably with the other methods, whereby growth subsequent to treatment occurs after a few days or weeks.

Laser hair removal treatment is also suitable for all areas of the body, with the exception of the area surrounding the eye. The most commonly treated areas include the face (chin and area above the upper lip), arms and armpits, and the legs. The colour of the treatment candidate's skin and hair is a key determinant for the success of the treatment, with those with fair skin and darker hair most likely to experience good results.

Prior to the commencement of treatment, a candidate will meet with their doctor to discuss their medical history, the risks and benefits of the treatment, and their own expectations. The doctor is likely to have some photograhs taken of the area to be treated for use in a before-and-after comparison.

In preparing for treatment, the candidate should remember that the session will have to be postponed if they are sunburnt, as the risk of negative side effects will be higher. Candidates are asked to shave the treatment area two to three days before the session to allow for some stubble growth the efficacy of the laser technique is increased when the hair to be removed is short and visible.

Goggles are worn during the procedure to protect the eyes from accidental exposure to laser energy. A stinging sensation is felt when the laser is activated, and the hair will normally be slightly singed, giving off a “burnt” smell. The doctor will sometimes administer a local anaesthetic to reduce the patient's discomfort. Depending on the size of the treatment area, a session can last anywhere from several minutes to several hours.

Following treatment, some redness and swelling is common, and a stinging sensation may persist for 24-48 hours. Crusting of the skin may occur. It is recommended that exercise in the 48 hours after treatment be avoided, as perspiration is likely to aggravate the irritation caused by the laser. Similarly, the skin will be sensitive, so exposure to the sun should be avoided as much as possible, and sunscreen should be worn when outdoors. One should not wax or pluck hairs in the treatment area between sessions, and the skin in this area should nit be picked at or manipulated.
